The Things Unseen
Simply Macro
Macro photography is our ticket to be transported into the tiny worlds-within-worlds around us. Observation with the human eye is not able to reveal the things unseen that do exist even though we may not be aware of them.
Once in the macro world texture, shape and colour take on a dominant function to reveal visual information not visible to the naked eye. The macro lens allows us to see the iridescent texture of a petal, individual grains of pollen and the formative structure of the plant. As we enlarge the image these structures are suddenly transformed into large-scale forms that appear as alien or unfamiliar landscapes. When I process these images on computer I am always pleasantly surprised and amazed to see the intricate level of detail within each plant structure, the most incredible tiny sculptures that often remain unseen.
Macro photography requires the use of a tripod for camera stability. Due to the longer length of the lens, light takes slightly longer to pass to the camera sensor. Any movement of the subject or camera will create blur and loss of detail. Although some photographers prefer to shoot macro in studio where light and movement conditions can be controlled, I chose to shoot these images in
the Flower and Cloud domes so that I could have access to the wonderful variety of plant species. I think the beauty revealed in the hidden details of the macro world is a testament to the wonderful diversity and inestimable value of our natural environment.
